Dental Implant Restoration

Bothell, WA Woman with white teeth smilingWhen faced with tooth loss, your whole life is affected. Various issues, including, facial trauma, gum disease, and more can cause tooth loss. No matter what the cause, the effects are always the same. Tooth loss impacts your eating and speaking abilities as well as the appearance of your smile. Missing teeth also affect the health of your jawbone, leading to bone loss. Dental implants are the most popular option for tooth replacement. Noreen Goldwire, DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry can help by placing the restorative crowns after the implants have fused to your jawbone

What Are Dental Implants?

For many years, your options were limited when it came to replacing missing teeth. Your only options were bridges or dentures. Dental implants are a modern alternative for tooth replacement, with the first successful implants placed in the 1960s. Dental implants are an unique treatment, using small titanium posts that are surgically implanted directly into your jawbone. These implants rely on a process known as osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process in which your bone fuses to the posts, stabilizing them in your jaw. The posts then essentially become the roots that are used to support your replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth, whether you are missing only one or you are missing all of your teeth. It can take several months for full osseointegration. Once the implants have fully osseointegrated, we can then begin the process of placing your permanent replacement teeth.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer numerous benefits, including:
•  They look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.
•  Comfortable. Your teeth are supported by the posts, which are supported by your bone, rather than your gums.
•  They can be cared for just like your natural teeth.
•  Implants help to preserve the strength and integrity of your jawbone. The posts function like the roots of your natural teeth and stimulate your jawbone. This restoration of stimulation stops, and prevents, the bone loss that follows tooth loss.

Implant Restorations

Once you have fully healed from dental implant surgery, we can create, and place, your dental implant restorations. This process often takes two separate appointments to complete. During your first appointment, we remove your temporary teeth and place the abutments, or connectors, onto the exposed ends of your posts. The abutments help to stabilize your dental crowns on your implants. After placing the abutments, we then take impressions of your mouth. The impressions are sent to our dental lab. The images are used to design teeth that will fit perfectly in your mouth. The crowns, which are typically made of ceramic, are then created. The teeth are milled from ceramic blocks that match the color of the rest of your teeth.
It can take up to two weeks for your final implant restorations to be completed and sent back. Once they are ready, you return for your second appointment. Your restorations are checked to make sure that they fit properly in your mouth and that they blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile. They are then secured into place on the posts with small screws.

Dental implants not only give you back the functions and aesthetics of your mouth, but they also help to restore your confidence and your quality of life.
