Home Care

Forming Good Dental Habits

Maintaining a healthy smile is dependent on how you care for your teeth in-between visits. Good home care habits can be established by anyone committed to dedicating a little bit of time daily to their oral health. Like regular exercise, consistency is the key to building a healthy habit. Brushing twice a day for at least two minutes and flossing once a day is the standard for ideal at-home dental care.

Foundation for a healthy smile at home:

  • Brush for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss once a day
  • Clean tongue with a toothbrush or tongue scraper
  • Replace toothbrush every three months

We can help you plan an optimal home-care plan

With so many products on the market today, it can be confusing to know which products will actually benefit your smile. Your hygienist can help you narrow down the endless options and form a plan with the hygiene tools that fit you and your particular needs. From electric toothbrushes to fluoride mouthwash, we can help you find the best products for you to get the most out of your oral care routine.

Some patients at a higher risk for certain dental problems and require more individualized routines. Simple, inexpensive substitutions can transform the environment of your mouth and dramatically reduce disease activity. If your teeth are more prone to cavities, we may prescribe you a high fluoride toothpaste for extra protection. We may also suggest diet changes. For example, Xylitol is a naturally-derived sweetener that can minimize cavities in children and adults when used in the right dosages.

At Noreen Goldwire DDS, we want to help you have a successful at-home care routine. Don't hesitate to ask us how you can improve your routine.
