Children's Dentistry

Pediatric Digital X-rays

Getting a Better Picture - Why does my child need x-rays at the dentist?

  • To ensure there is enough room in your child's mouth for all their permanent teeth
  • Determine if your child is losing their baby teeth fast enough to allow room for their permanent teeth
  • Check for preliminary development of wisdom teeth or any teeth that are unable to erupt from the gums (commonly known as impacted)
  • Assess for early signs of tooth decay, especially between the teeth
  • Look for any abnormal developments, such as cysts or tumors

Digital x-rays help identify problems early and save you from costly procedures later. For example, x-rays allow us to diagnose cavities while they are tiny, often allowing for less invasive treatments. If they are caught early enough, decay may be stopped with some minor changes to your child’s home care routine.

Today’s digital x-rays expose your child to less radiation than ever before. Lead aprons and taking x-rays only when necessary further reduce your child’s exposure.
